Art Museum Seeking Docents

Published

The Paul and Lulu Hilliard University Art Museum is seeking volunteers willing to serve as docents for the 2005-2006 exhibition season.

A docent is a liaison between the museum and the general public. They serve as tour guides for museum visitors, prepare background information on the works of art in the museum’s collections, special exhibitions and new acquit ions and give presentations at local schools and community organizations.

These volunteers can expect to have satisfying experiences while working with children, college students and community members. They will network with artists, art professionals and community leaders while expanding their understanding of art and being challenged by new ideas.

Museum staff, lecturers and experienced docents will introduce trainees to several areas including the study of art history, museum education, formal elements of art and the museum’s history and policies. The training will take place from September through June.

The Docent Program requires a minimum one-year commitment. Provisional docents meet only each Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon from September through June. No meetings are held after the second week of December through the first week of January.

Every other training session will be geared especially for new docents. Additional hours each week may be required for research, reading assignments, preparation of writing and speaking assignments, and/or observation of active docents as they tour in the museum and speak in the community.

To receive a docent application, call Mark Tullos at (337) 482-1369 or visit the Paul and Lulu Hilliard University Art Museum at 710 East St. Mary Boulevard in Çàɬֱ²¥.
